The Soudtrack...Just Another Part of The Whole

Okay, this will be my last post in my film blog! So sad.  Anyway, I think what I want to talk about is something I have been thinking about a lot lately...music.  Recently, I started to notice how important it is to have appropiate music in a film.  I realized this by watching how other movies have been choosing to use their music, and seeing first-hand how well it works.  I always had thought that the soundtrack to a film was just using megahits whenever they could in order to sell soundtracks.  However, if you look at movies like Sunshine and Moon (two of my favorites), they have composers creating these epic pieces of music that accompany and add so much to the film itself.  I'm not trying to say this is anything new, I am just noticing it more now.

I think all in all, that is what I like so much about films.  It takes different people with totally different skills to complete a job, and make it work out great.  Whether you act, direct, produce, promote, write, work with lighting, sound, are a studio exec. or are even creating the music...it all has to work.  Everyone has to come together, with their individual talents, and do their best.  Once these pieces add up, they equal one film.  It's all just so cool to me.  Well, I think that's it for me.  Thanks for reading!!

  1. First of all, I think you should try to continue your blog because it seems like you really enjoy it and if you're like me, it's a fun way to talk about your thoughts! I really appreciate the collaborative process of film as well. I have never actually seen a large film being made but you can tell the time and effort put into it just by the final product. The soundtrack to Marie Antoinette is probably one of my favorites. I get chills whenever I hear the piano songs used and I think that there is a perfect infusion of modern music in with classical sounding tunes. I also really appreciate The Brother's Bloom. It is nice when one band creates the entire score because it really does give everything a cohesive quality. Plus, "Penelope's Theme" is one of the only songs I have ever heard in my life that made my imagination run wild and truly visualize the character it was written for. It's a level of perfection that I don't think I could ever match if I tried to write a song to describe someone. If this is your last blog, I've enjoyed it and have a great summer!

  2. I agree with Jamie! I love reading your blog and I think you should continue writing about music. I think it's great to see how passionate you are about music. You're right, soundtracks (in my opinion) can make or break a film. One of my favorite soundtracks is the one to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I think it definitely "made" the movie.

  3. You definitely shouldn't let this be your last blog, especially if you enjoy writing about what you are passionate about! I also love researching the soundtracks to the movies I watch. You should definitely check out Danny Elfman, he's one of my favorite soundtrack composers. He's done soundtracks for movies like: Wanted, The Simpsons, Spider Man, Hulk, Chicago, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Goodwill Hunting, and many others...

  4. I totally agree with your thoughts. I really think that soundtracks make the movie. I remember seeing the first twilight movie (don't judge me) and it barely had a soundtrack at all. I sat through the whole movie thinking this is absolutely terrible. There were so many awkward moments without music. I never realized how important it is for that background noise. Anyway great post enjoy the rest of your summer.

  5. Danny, I couldn't agree more that the music is vital to making the movie excellent. I think one of my favorite composers would have to be Danny Elfman because his work is so unique! Anytime you hear something of his whether it is Nightmare Before Christmas, any Tim Burton films, or even Batman, you can always distinguish his songs. I think even music with excellent soundtracks like the Transformers movies are important. I love how Linkin Park always has a new song for them with each installment and gets me excited to see the movie. I also like how it sets the tone for the scene and how the viewer is supposed to feel. Also, I watched Revolutionary Road again the other day and there is a certain tune that plays during sad and more serious moments that only occurs in that movie. Or even the Harry Potter theme music! I like when little things, like instrumentals, help me remember the feeling I had/have while watching a particular movie.

  6. Danny,
I never really thought about what you brought up in your blog. I think you make a very valid point. Music choice in a film lures the viewers in and adds to the overall effect of the movie. I appreciate the fact that you take the time to recognize all the people and multiple jobs it takes to produce one final production. After reading your blog I realized some of my top favorite movie soundtracks were: Pulp Fiction, Trainspotting and Rushmore.

  7. I think that soundtracks really make a movie. I have to admit I'm a bit of a soundtrack junkie. The score's of movies just always seem to catch my ear. I love Danny Elfman. He scored films a lot of Tim Burton films along with other films like Spider-Man, Wanted, Chicago, Hulk, and Milk. He really is a talented composer. You can usually tell when your listneing to a Danny Elfman piece. Another one of my favorite composers is, Hans Zimmer. He really is something. He composed the Inception soundtrack and it is so amazing. I think it might be one of my favorite sountracks ever. The soundtrack really helped make that movie what it was. You should check out some of his stuff!

  8. Soundtracks to movies have always been a great way, for me, to discover new music. Juno had one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard and got me interested in a whole different type of music. A soundtrack I'd suggest checking out would be the "Sucker Punch" soundtrack. It has some amazing music that just makes the movie that much better.
